Mission Statement:

Richland PTO is a community of families committed to elevating the Richland school experience for all stakeholders.

PTO Objectives:

The Richland PTO will fundraise and mobilize volunteers in order to:

  • a. Promote programs and initiatives that support the well-being of the children of Richland Elementary School,

  • b. Cultivate an informed and cooperative environment between parents and teachers, in support of the students,

  • c. Partner with the local community, to elevate the experience of Richland students and families,

  • d. Generally support, promote, assist, and supplement the educational programs and facilities of Richland Elementary School,

  • e. Privately fund intervention tutors for students, not otherwise funded by the district,

  • g. Model and promote inclusiveness.

  • h. Organize and lead staff appreciation efforts in order to strengthen family and staff relationships and boost school morale.

Our PTO positions are listed below. Click on the title to see a brief description of what that position or committee does.

It takes lots of volunteers to make our programs and events a success and we’d love for you to get involved! If you are interested in joining a committee, email Martha Carter, PTO President.

+ Accelerated Reader Chair

Students are encouraged to participate in the Accelerated Reader program and earn points by taking tests on the books that they read. Students can use AR points to participate in PTO created incentives. This position is responsible for obtaining prizes and organizing the events where the students can use their points to buy prizes.

+ Annual Giving Campaign Chair

The PTO has embraced an annual giving campaign fundraiser for the last several years, and it is the main fundraiser for the PTO. The committee is responsible for collaborating with other members of the annual giving campaign committee to determine a theme, design products for fundraising, and create incentives for fundraising goals met. All proceeds from the sales benefit the PTO. The committee collects orders, works with the printing company to fulfill those orders, and distributes them to students and staff. Extra donations are also encouraged to help reach the campaign goal.

+ Annual Giving Campaign Corporate Chair

The PTO has embraced an annual giving campaign fundraiser for the last several years. This chair is responsible for seeking out corporate sponsors as part of our campaign efforts. In order to accomplish this, this chair will work with the PTO President to identify PTO event needs that will be used as a platform for seeking sponsorships. Once the needs are identified, the chair will develop donation tiers and an advertising plan for reaching the goal. In addition, this chair will ensure all corporate sponsors are given appropriate recognition.

+ Book Fair Chair

The Book Fair Committee assists the Library Media Specialist (librarian) in planning, organizing, and running the Scholastic Book Fair twice per school year. The committee is in charge of setting up and decorating the fair space(library and hall), as well as coordinating parent volunteers and running the book fair during business hours. Finally, the committee is responsible for breaking down and packing up the fair materials at the end of each fair.

+ Children in Need Chair

The Children in Need Chair assists the school counselors in meeting needs of Richland students. The chair meets with the school counselors, organizes school supply and uniform drives as needed, and maintains the Richland uniform closet. When student needs are recognized, the chair purchases items such as backpacks, coats, clothing, shoes, socks, leggings, hats and other necessary items.

+ Community Rewards & Spirit Event Chair

This position plans a monthly local fundraiser. Responsibilities include reaching out to the community to find restaurants, book stores, etc to host spirit nights, advertising the events through the PTO's social media and flyers in Wednesday folders, be a host at the events, welcoming families as they arrive and following up with the location after the event to ensure that the funds are collected.

+ Copy Chair - Wednesday Folders

This position makes copies weekly of any flyer or announcement that the PTO sends out to the parents and families of students

+ Field Day Concessions/KK New Student Welcome Chair

This position coordinates the ordering and distributing food for Field Day. This includes coming up with menu items for the students and staff to choose from, collecting money, ordering food and distributing the food on field day as well as contacting vendors (Mempops, etc.) and recruiting volunteers to help grill and distribute the purchased items.

This position also ensures that all new Richland students feel welcomed to the community. They organize the popsicle social at the beginning of the year to welcome Kindergarten students to Richland. They also create welcome bags that are handed out at the annual Gear Up Day.

+ Grant Writer & Fundraiser Chair

This position researches potential grant opportunities and shares the opportunities to PTO's Executive Board to determine next steps. If the board votes to proceed, the grant writer will complete the necessary paperwork for applying for the grant. The grant writer will communicate updates on the status of approved grant opportunities to the board.

In addition to grants, this chair might also be assigned small fundraisers to oversee that do not fall under another chair.

+ Grounds Beautification Chair

Grounds Beautification committee members serve by identifying landscaping needs (weeding, restocking rock borders, etc) around the school. Four to five times a year you will schedule school-wide workdays to accomplish bigger projects with Richland family volunteers. Walk the campus to pick up large limbs and trash periodically. This position can be done solo or with a team to share responsibilities.

+ Hospitality PTO Events Chair

The Hospitality committee of PTO events is responsible for organizing several events during the school year that are hosted by the PTO. See dates below! Main responsibilities include purchasing supplies for the events, ordering or purchasing food, organizing volunteers to help serve, set up, and clean up when the event is over.

+ Hospitality Teacher Luncheons Chair

The Teacher Hospitality Committee is responsible for organizing 5 main meals over the year for the teachers and any additional teacher hospitality events requested by PTO Executive Board. Set events include Back to school in August, World Teacher Day breakfast, Holiday lunch in December, a small TCap tea before state testing, and a grand finale teacher appreciation luncheon in May. There have been occasions throughout the year where the committee has adapted and brought in snacks for the teachers when a full luncheon could not be provided. Or an extra soup day during the cold winter months.

Main responsibilities include organizing a menu, communicating with restaurants if needed, utilizing sign ups for delicious dishes from our PTO, and preparing food.

+ Inclusion Liaison & Advocate Chair

This chair is responsible for ensuring that all Richland students are given the opportunity to participate in PTO-sponsored events by offering insight and guidance into possible needs that students might have at various events throughout the school year. This position works closely with the PTO President to be a thought partner in all event planning.

+ Lunchroom Volunteers Chair

Creates a signup genius throughout the year so parents can sign up to help in the lunchroom and encourage parents to participate.

+ Online Winter Auction Chair

The auction committee will organize and prep auction donation items. They will reach out to donors with the help of PTO members, PTO board members, teachers for teacher experiences and room sponsors. They will advertise and have signage made. The committee will add items to Bidding Owl (or an alternative site) for preview and then open bidding the day of the auction. They will contact the winners and deliver items afterwards.

+ PTO Task Force

The PTO Task Force is a group of PTO Board members who fill PTO volunteer needs that are not currently assigned to a PTO committee or when a PTO Committee requests additional support for more extensive efforts. The members on this team are presented with needs and can opt in or out depending on their own availability at the time. This committee is an excellent opportunity for new Board members to experience a variety of PTO efforts or for a Board member who is unable to commit to a specific committee but wants to be involved on a regular basis. On average, there will be 1-2 support opportunities per week that are organized by the Task Force Chair.

+ Readathon Chair

Organizes the event by encouraging students to read and secure sponsors to raise money for the tutoring program. Coorindates incentives and prizes.

+ Redhawk Ambassador Chair

The Redhawk Ambassadors serve Richland throughout their 5th grade year. Typically, these student leaders greet and welcome guests to our school and also assist with special programs when needed. As the chair, you help find ways for them to get involved, assist them when needed, and communicate important information to their grown-up.

+ Richland Redhawk Facebook Chair

This committee oversees the Richland Redhawk Parents Facebook page and ensures that comments stay supportive, uplifting, and avoids negativity. In addition, they respond to parent questions to direct parents to needed information.

+ Richland Spirit Wear Chair

This position leads the research, creation, and production of all Richland Redhawk spirit wear and products. Once products are made, this chair ensures that products are sold for profit and available for purchase in an online store or at PTO-sponsored events. This chair also collaborates with the webmaster to ensure products are available for purchase on the PTO website, as needed.

For pre-order items, the chair coordinates the entire process including design, pricing, advertising, communicating with vendor, delivery, and all buyer communication.

Please note: All drafted designs MUST be approved by both the PTO President and Principal prior to approval with vendor. In addition, the PTO President and PTO Treasurer must approve the final sell price for items.

+ Room Sponsor Chair

Every school year, one or more parents from each classroom volunteer to serve as "Room Sponsors." These individuals assist the teacher in coordinating class events and communicating event details to parents. As such, Room Sponsors represent an efficient way to quickly disseminate school-wide information to families. The Room Sponsor Coordinator is the individual responsible for informing Lead Room Sponsors of important Richland events (e.g. Trunk-or-Treat, Book Fair) so that they can then inform the class parents.

+ Safety Chair

Volunteers to help with traffic duty and greeting families in the mornings.

+ Skate Night Chair

This position is responsible for scheduling four skate nights with Cordova Skate Center. Create flyers to promote the events and place yard signs in front of the school. Obtain prizes to raffle during the event. Be present for the entire event, greeting Richland families and encouraging them to sign up for the raffle. Work with Cordova Skate Center to verify funds raised at the end of the nights and ensure the funds are deposited to Richland’s Children in Need fund.

+ Spring Fling Chair

Spring Fling is an outdoor end of the year carnival and fundraiser, typically held in April. The committee organizes a team of volunteers to help sell tickets, rent the bounce houses and other games, order food, and set up and manage the different tables and games the day of the event.

+ Teacher Appreciation Chair

The chairperson provides a birthday card and “happy” for the teachers and staff on their birthday month. In addition this chair oversees the six grade-level sponsored teacher appreciation snack tables or carts throughout the school year and a "We Love our Richland Teachers" dessert bar for Valentine's Day.

+ Titles for Tomorrow Chair

Titles for Tomorrow: a $20 donation is collected for a student’s birthday/half birthday/holiday/special occasion or in memoriam of a loved one. This donation then is used to purchase a grade specific book and goody bag that is presented to the student on that designated day. Books are then donated to the individual classroom libraries or school library, whichever the board decides for that year. The chairperson is in charge of purchasing the books and goody bags, placing a nameplate inside the book and presenting the items to the student on the specific day. The student will get to take the book home for 2 weeks, then will bring it back to be donated to the school.

+ Trunk or Treat/Fall Fest Chair

This chair is in charge of the annual Trunk or Treat/Fall Fest event for families.

+ Webmaster Chair

This position is responsible for maintaining the PTO website. It requires staying up to date on all Richland happenings, compiling information from the weekly PTO emails, school and PTO Facebook posts and the school website to make sure our site stays up to date. You maintain the online store, setting up products for sale and track the orders as they come through, making sure that orders through the website are fulfilled.

+ Yearbook Chair

Yearbook co-chairs are responsible for the sales, production and distribution of the Richland yearbook. This is a job that can be done primarily in the evenings or weekends, so it's great for a working parent that can't be at school during the day. Through the fall semester, responsibilities are minimal (1 hour/week) and include:

  • Taking photos at events
  • Soliciting photo submissions from parents
  • Marketing and sales for yearbook and 5th grade ads
  • Coordinating yearbook cover art contest

The busiest time is January through March to compile a complete, accurate book that represents the diverse student population at Richland. During these months, you may spend as much as 6-8 hours/week working on the book, but it's really fun and rewarding work!
